The Alliance for Education is a partnership among business, labor, government, community and education in San Bernardino County in Southern California. Our mission is to produce an educated and skilled community that provides a qualified workforce for the continued economic well-being and improved quality of life for all residents.

Since February 2002, the Alliance members and executive board have advanced a collaborative effort that has aligned common goals of key educational institutions, workforce preparation training organizations and committed stakeholders to achieve the following goals:

Education: Strengthen a standards-based, academically rigorous and technically advanced education with relevant, work-based learning opportunities provided by business, labor, and community partnerships.

Family Engagement: Provide family education, parent engagement activities, and literacy support programs and resources through education institutions, businesses, and community and faith-based organizations.

Economic and Workforce Development: Utilize current systems of workforce preparation in order to effectively align common goals and resources and deliver services, education and/or training to students and adults countywide.

Student achievement is the key to economic prosperity, an improved quality of life, and a successful future. Students require support to meet specific benchmarks in order to build a strong foundation for educational success in preparation for college and career. Each of the three goals of the Alliance has emerged into an integrated system of college and career readiness, with an emphasis in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

This dynamic, integrated education and workforce readiness system has hinged upon communities embracing a collective impact approach to implement the Countywide Vision and the Cradle to Career Roadmap. The County Vision Education Element Team is focusing on an organized movement in which families, educators, government, business and labor, and faith- and community-based organizations act as pillars of support for students.

What is STEM:

The Alliance for Education, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, has adopted the California STEM Learning Network (CSLNet) definition of STEM:

"STEM education is more than just science, technology, engineering or mathematics; it is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is coupled with real-world, problem-based learning. This bridging among the four discrete disciplines is now known as STEM. STEM education removes the traditional barriers erected between the four disciplines by integrating them into one cohesive teaching and learning paradigm. Today, new innovations and inventions tend to be made at the boundaries of these four disciplines, where they naturally overlap.

A STEM-literate student is not only an innovator and critical thinker, but is able to make meaningful connections between school, community, work and global issues. A STEM-literate high school graduate can enroll in a college-level course of study in science, technology, engineering, and math without the need for remediation. STEM skills are increasingly necessary to engage in a knowledge-based economy. There is solid evidence to suggest that the fastest-growing and highest-wage jobs in future years will be in STEM fields and all employees will need to utilize STEM skills for problem solving in a wide range of industries."
