Upland Junior High STEM Received $10,000 From Verizon


UPLAND – Verizon donated $10,000 to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program at Upland Junior High School on Aug. 26 in a ceremony featuring world- renowned Verizon Indycar Series driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

Montoya, who is currently sixth in the Verizon Indycar Series point standings and will compete at the Indycar MAVTV 500 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana on Aug. 30, visited Upland Junior High on Aug. 26, signed autographs for students and talked with students about practical applications of their STEM studies.

Teacher Jason Craig is the STEM instructor at Upland Junior High. Principal Pam Chavira talked about the program during the check presentation ceremony.

Montoya is the only driver to win on his first attempt at a CART Series title, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 hours of Daytona. He is one of three drivers to win races on each of the following circuits: Formula 1, CART/Indycar and NASCAR.
